ShunkanDust In Your Eyes

by LJ Kessels

Meaning moment, second or instant in Japanese, Shunkan is the alias of 20 year-old New Zealand-based artist Marina Sakimoto, whose music is an exciting hotch-potch of the most influential musicians from recent years – when a yelling moan escapes her mouth one can’t help but think of Karen O or even Cibo Matta.

The sound of her voice in ‘Dust in Your Eyes‘ feels very analog, like taped recordings done in a garage, reminiscent of grunge and riot grrrl bands from the early 90’s, while the instrumental has elements of traditional Buddhist temple melodies disrupted by strong guitar interludes. This combination makes it completely irresistible, that track feeling instantly recognizable and interesting with its rich collection of influences, and its varying new sides and elements in the same song.

Following on from the brilliant Wash You Away the track is another bold footprint from one the most exciting young voices of the year and Art Is Hard Records will release her 5-track debut EP ‘Honey, Milk and Blood’ on May 5th. You can pre-order it here / stream the track below.
