words by tom johnson
Always shimmering in the high echelons of the current crop of dream-pop creators, San Fran trio The Bilinda Butchers captured many a heart and mind on their exquisite full-length effort, Heaven, initially released in 2014 but still held in prominent, high regard to this day. Lovely news, then, that today the band are sharing a brand new piece of music in the form of “Girlfriend”, a glorious three-and-a-half minutes that arrives via a striking new video, made in Beijing by their long-time collaborator Anise Mariko, whose work has been featured in the official selection for SSFF Cinematic Tokyo.
Released ahead of a string of Asian tour dates, which kick-off in Hong Kong on May 15th (full set of dates listed below), GFP is very pleased to unveil the new song and video here today – and you can check it out below right now. Underpinned by a sense of longing, that comes to the fore in the lyrics but is pertinently present in the tugging nostalgia of the music itself, all lilting guitars, crisp percussion and dense atmospherics that cloak those aforementioned words like fog around the city, subtly changing the shape of things, like a dream brought quietly to life.
A captivating combination from start-to-finish, you can watch the new video right here and discover the rest of their back-catalogue over on Bandcamp.
