Ólafur Arnalds

“they sink”

(TOKiMONSTA remix)

words by tom johnson

The somber and somewhat murky mid-point of Ólafur Arnalds beautiful 2018 re:member LP, “they sink” is the kind of song that always felt ripe for re-working; the fleeting nature of it, the gently swelling strings, those drifting piano keys which seem to hint at something that never actually arrives.

Such premonitions are made good today, however, on this beautiful new remix of the track courtesy of the LA-based, Grammy-nominated producer TOKiMONSTA, who transforms Arnalds’ original composition into a beautifully colourful, near five-minute trip through scattered percussive spikes and stirring, pulsing beats – and we’re very excited to premiere the new piece here today.

“I met TOKiMONSTA when playing alongside each other at Sónar Reykjavík a couple of years ago,” Arnalds says of the roots beneath this collaboration. “Instantly fascinated by her approach and sound, I was very excited to see what she would do with a track like ’they sink’.”

The result is something both intriguing and sparkling, the shift in tempo, the radiance of it all, calling to mind the summer-like mysticism of Geotic, Gold Panda, et al, while still holding onto the brightness found in TOKiMONSTA’s own brightest moments.

The new version of ‘they sink’ also acts as a prelude to a busy second-half of 2019 for Ólafur Arnalds, who recently announced his own London Southbank takeover – called Opia – for later this year. The November 8th event will see the Icelandic composer perform alongside a series of invited guests including Grandbrothers, Rhye, Poppy Ackroyd and Josin to name a handful.

Tickets for the special event are on sale now (here), and you can check out the wonderful TOKiMONSTA remix below right now.
