What better way to lurch out of winter than with the news that the inimitable Jeffrey Lewis is all set to release a brand new album this-coming Spring, via Don Giovanni Records, a fifteen-track collection which goes by the somewhat un-snappy title of: “WORKS by TULI KUPFERBERG, interpreted (and/or misinterpreted) by Jeffrey Lewis & The Deposit Returners“.

Featuring Lewis’ take on a host of songs by cult rock and roll star Tuli Kupferberg (1923-2010), the new record is pitched as a “rollicking, laughing, tear-jerking, psychedelic ride through a hidden history of New York City folk-punk sub-genius.” The record follows on from Lewis’ friendship with Kupferberg, which has led to Lewis organising a “Tuli-day” memorial tribute concert every year since his passing in 2010. Kupferberg was perhaps best known for his 60s work with his band The Fugs, and original member Peter Stampfel features here as part of Lewis’ backing-band across the new album.

Which is a lot to take in. However, we can also just let the music do the talking for now, and, as such, we’re extremely pleased to unveil brand new track This Train Is Bound For Brooklyn, the record’s breezy centre-piece, and a cover plucked from Tuli’s “Listen to the Mockingbird” songbook series of the1970s. Led by a playful, jaunty run of piano, the track is wonderfully full-of-life, the hand-clap percussion, the wonderfully loose nature of it all feeling both instantly compelling and richly antiquated; a glowing introduction to what promises to be one of the year’s most boisterous homages.

The album is available to pre-order here; and you check out the new track below right away.
