One of those success stories that keeps the fire burning, it’s almost two years to the day that we first profiled Soccer Mommy’s richly absorbing guitar-pop, so it’s with warm hearts that we share the news that her full debut album, Clean, will be released on March 2nd, via the brilliant Fat Possum label.
The flourishing project of Nashville, Tennessee, singer-songwriter Sophie Allison, the engaging strength of Soccer Mommy lies in her ability to craft detailed and relatively bright songs that linger for far longer than their immediate running time, hiding the darker parts of her psyche in the deep shadows, slowly revealing themselves over time. From that forthcoming album, new track ‘Your Dog’ is indicative of these sentiments, a punchy three-minutes that plunged new depths both with repeated and plays and, most pertinently, when heard via the striking accompanying video, which is a suitably provocative and gnarly film.
That she manages to balance the light and dark so subtly is made even more impressive by the fact that the song, at least lyrically, immediately sets its stall out: “I don’t want to be a fucking dog that you drag around,” she sings on the opening line, and yet you still get the sense that the song could slip seamlessly in to midday, toe-tapping radio A-lists. Wherever it finds itself, ‘Your Dog’ sits as a fascinating and wholly invigorating next-step; a coming-of-age that adds whets the appetite for that debut record even further; very special indeed.
