words by tom johnson
“These songs come from the same pool as the songs from Some Twist. For whatever reason, they felt like outliers at the time, and weren’t included in the mixing sessions. You can hear some pieces…a few lines here and there that worked their way into that record in a different form. I see this as an extension of those songs, and that process. It’s not easy to separate myself from that process – the time and place spent recording these things – I’ve stopped trying to hear it any other way.”
– Michael Nau
Outliers they may well be, but such things still have the ability to transfix and fascinate, and so it proves to be on “Diamond Anyway”, the new track from Michael Nau’s forthcoming “surprise EP”, and one that adds Natalie Prass’ golden, soulful croon to his own magnetic voice, creating a beautiful four-and-a-half minute rumination that almost aches with the quiet magic that runs through its core.
Led, almost solely, by a soft acoustic strum, Diamond Anyway feels akin to a celebration of the voice, Nau’s rugged but bluesy voice driving the whole thing forward, forging a path of its own, one that’s occasionally adorned by Prass’ subtle shadow and little linings of shuffling drums and ambience that underpin the more prevalent and pertinent aspects aforementioned.
A gem of a track from an artist who continues to grow and flourish upon each release, you can stream the unreleased track below right now – the EP is released on Friday, and follows the Some Twist LP, released earlier this summer.
