“Wasted Time”

The coffee is wearing me down, and I’m tired everyday,” sings Kirsten Ludwig on ‘Wasted Time’, the weight of her exhaustion felt in each note. The Canadian dream-folk musician may have an abundant discography behind her, but her latest single – set for release this fall via a new EP on Kathryn Calder’s (The New Pornographers) label Oscar St. Records – is as bountiful as we hoped. Unveiled here today, the EP’s title track is an intimate four-minute commentary, an exploration into the mind of an artist bound to the service industry for survival.

Lush with instrumentation but plainly led by Ludwig’s compelling voice, ‘Wasted Time’ laments the moments we lose when we work to live. The artist becomes the weary-eyed waitress. The musician becomes the retail assistant with aching cheeks. The creative, now known as the ever-present, ever-smiling, at-your-service employee who sacrifices hours, days, weeks in a strive to pay the bills. What else can we do, but turn to poetry, music, art? We twist and we turn. Our hands are littered with grazes, burns. Our eyes are heavy. We stare at our reflections yet we do not see ourselves.

‘Wasted Time’ is a declaration of worth, an inwards look to the struggle of the artist. Yet throughout, Ludwig takes these frustrations and moulds them into a track so full of beauty and radiance, her words resonating and her strength insistent. “This song is a big hug for all of my hardworking service job workers out there…” she says. “I understand.”
