words by tom johnson
Unwinding over the course of a near six-minute sprawl, “Instructional Video” is the new track from Juan de Fuca, an Athens, Georgia-based project, and the second to be lifted from their new LP, recorded last summer with Drew Vandenberg (Mothers, Toro y Moi), and released via new Athens label Pep Talk, which is co-run by Tamarron’s Sam Houdek, who’s new EP we shared here last week.
The band themselves are the expansive project of Jack Cherry, and “Instructional Video” is another sublime piece of melancholic meandering, the weight of sentiment like tugging feeling of distraction, settled in the gut and ever-present even when trying your best to forget about it. Rising towards a mid-point that adds beautiful backing vocals that brood away in the background amid the rolling guitar and distinct fogginess of the whole composition, the track is a bewitching proposition, one that feels defiantly human despite the vagueness that lends itself so compellingly throughout, something exemplified by the elongated ambient-noise outro that delicately unravels from within.
The band’s new album, Solve/Resolve, is released later this Spring; check out the new song here:
