words by tom johnson
The magnetic charm of Hikes‘ previous work saw the band travel oceans, the word-of-mouth praise for their previous Lilt LP billowing around the record, leading to an appearance at the much lauded math-rock festival, Arctangent, here in the UK.
Finding a home on Community Records, the ever-excellent New Orleans based label, the band have spent the time between carving out a whole new set of songs, and their new Mahal Kita LP is released at the end of November – also via fellow labels To Lose La Track (EU) and Friend of Mine Records (Japan).
Preceding the full release, and coinciding with a run of shows alongside Saddle Creek’s Black Belt Eagle Scout (details of which can be found here), the Austin, Texas-based project today unveil a brand new track from the album in the form of the glowing, absorbing been thinkin‘ – which you can stream below here on GFP from today.
Informed by their customary angular, guitar-led magic, the song begins with a tender stirring of the waters, gentle vocals and subtle swells of instrumentation that grow in stature as the song rolls forward, little flecks of intricacy eventually blossoming into something more complex and playful but never really feels like letting loose; a secret held on the edge of a tongue.
Quietly absorbing from start-to-finish, the new song is both a reminder of their craft and a stirring prelude to what comes next; check it out below right now and be sure to investigate the full album when it arrives next month.
Mahal Kita is released November 22nd via Community Records (US) / To Lose La Track (EU) / Friend of Mine Records (Japan)
