It’s not that the current Glasgow scene has become stale, more that it’s currently pushing a slew of scuzzy guitar bands to the forefront of its window-front. Which makes the debut EP from Happy Spendy even more compelling and noticeable. Released, as the true hidden gems are, with little fanfare or glamour last month, “You Look Lovely” offers three mellow and melodramatic tracks from Eimear (Derry born, Glasgow based) and co. which acts as the first glimpse in to the project’s subtle electro-pop sketches.
Play their first live show at the end of the month (alongside Marble Gods, Lovers Turn to Monsters & Lush Purr) the EP was released last month and is followed up by a brand new video shared this week in advance of the aforementioned show. Melding alluring, smoky vocals with subtle instrumental arrangements, “You Look Lovely” is beautifully – not to mention impressively – constructed, each of the three tracks offering a slightly altered take on the other, while all hanging together like the most finely balanced puzzle.
Sometimes wistful, occasionally romantic, and always packed full of restless longing, the quiet magic of the work is evident in the new video for “Flex”, a song that simmers and glows and builds itself in to something sumptuously captivating. A very impressive starting-point, you can stream the full EP here, and get a taster via the new video below right now.
