With one rousing first full-length, Girl Ray properly introduced themselves in 2017 as considered writers of some of the most understated, tender and spirited pop music that has come from the UK in a long while. ‘Earl Grey’ thrived in not being afraid to express itself, full to the brim with wistful experiences and heartwarming melodiousness that has come to be the most earnest characteristics about the band’s sound.
Yet what strikes most about the trio is their penchant for writing with explorative and undiluted expression under relatively minimal foundations, and now with their very own festive number that comes to embody everything thats so great about Girl Ray, they are able to hint at what could be afforded to us in the near future.
‘(I Wish I Were Giving You A Gift) This Christmas’ is a forlorn and yet surprisingly inspiriting tale, one of mournful loneliness that’s slowly devoured by the leisurely introduction of twinkling bells, ponderous harmonies and prominent changes of pace that sound notably grand and pristine. It’s here where perhaps some evidence of Girl Ray’s progression in sound may lie, the addition of more strings to their yearning pop could be a natural next step for this wonderfully affable group.
A lovely signing off for the year, you can listen to ‘(I Wish I Were Giving You A Gift) This Christmas)’ below.
