“Hey, Dark Ones”
words by tom johnson
Released at the end of March via Whatever’s Clever & Ruination Record Co., Tethers, the new album from Chicago’s Minor Moon, is warm and inviting, a gorgeous feast of smart songwriting and exquisite instrumentation. It also features some esteemed guests from the Chicago scene and beyond, including the brilliant V.V. Lightbody and Macie Stewart of Ohmme, among others.
We’ve heard two songs from the record thus far, ahead of the album’s March 26th release date, and today we’re very pleased to unveil the album’s third single, in the form of the suitably pretty “Hey, Dark Ones” which is unveiled below via its beautiful accompanying video.
The new track leans more into the band’s self-defined “cosmic Americana” side, melding that aforementioned sumptuous playing with a skittish spirit that feels immediately compelling. Chief songwriter Sam Cantor’s leads from the front, guiding the band through the songs softened twists and turns with wide-eyed but playful sincerity. “Hey, Dark Ones is a song about a dancing shadow zombie underworld,” he says of the new track. “It’s also a song about self-knowledge and affirming life in the face of freaky and overwhelming darkness.”
The song’s video is equally immersive, conjuring additional intrigue from the colourful visuals that play out. “The making of this video with Austin [Koenigstein] was really spontaneous and very fun!” Cantor adds. “I think that by embodying that playfulness within the mysterious, shadowy and psyched-out visual world that Austin, Viv [V.V. Lightbody] and Jackie [Smook] created, we captured the spirit of both this song and the record as a whole.”
The full Tethers LP is released on March 26th, and available to preorder via Bandcamp now. Check out the new song and video right here:
