“Near To The Wild Heart Of Life”

“He was alone. He was unheeded, happy, and near to the wild heart of life.

He was alone and young and wilful and wildhearted, alone amid a waste of wild air

and brackish waters and the seaharvest of shells and tangle and veiled grey sunlight.”

James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

There are bands that play a meaningful role in your life, then there are those that feel like the best of friends; not just adding dashes of light to the edges of your shadows, but getting drunk and fucked-up alongside, adding jokes and warmth and context and a hand to hold in the times you really need. Japandroids are that very band, for a lot of people. Armed with the kind of visceral passion that feels powerfully potent and tangible, their back-catalogue is a fierce wall-of-arms that offers both searing hope, but also reckless abandon in almost equal measure.

After seemingly taking a big leap out of the limelight after their last record, the mighty Celebration Rock, the Canadian duo today announce their long-awaited return with the pleasingly epic new track “Near To The Wild Heart Of Life“, the title and opening track from the new LP, which arrives fully in January via ANTI Records. Suitably prophetic and sermon like in the way the whole thing unravels in a maelstrom of shoutable proclamations of love and life and death, the track is the band at their very best; an epic five-minutes and a sure-fire reminder of what made it all so special to begin with. Check it out below.

“So I left my home and all I had;

I used to be good but now I’m bad.”
