Tree Machines | Fucking Off Today

The easy part about music writing is the dissection; the picking apart of the components, the describing of the flow. The trouble comes from the adding of a personality, the telling of why a song resonates with you or not. It’s hard because there is no tangible answer, no easily defined parameters by which to judge one from another.

Tree Machines are a duo from Kansas, formed late last year and slowly sharing their creations. I can tell you that debut track ‘Fucking Off Today‘ is special. I can tell you that the thundering chorus packs a punch unlike most others we’ve received this year, I can tell you that the instrumentation boldly and suitably backs-up that striking vocal flourish but I can’t very easily tell you why I’ve been unable to stop listening to the track since first stumbling on it (thanks to this tweet from Daytrotter head honcho, Sean Moeller).

It’s got something to do with the passion that noticeably floods through it, a little something else to do with the inextricable power of pop music, and a little something else to do with the tiny little strands of a life being lived, threaded together to form a trail that runs right through the flourishing heart of the song.
