Francesca Fiore | Tanglemouth

by LJ Kessels

Cassette label Wild Patterns just released’Tanglemouth‘, the debut track from newcomers Francesca Fiore; a shoegaze duo consisting of Caitlin Klask and Michael Tenzer (2/3 of dream pop band, Savage Sister). In this side project the Chicago duo have traded in their synthesizers for loud guitars and created a sound reminiscent of Sonic Youth, The Cure, and the early Nineties Pacific North West.

The sound of distorted guitars accompanied by an almost choir-like singing are the two elements that make Tanglemouth work beautifully. One can imagine standing in a dark basement club, with the stench of sweat and beer, while the duo plays before you with either an obtuse lighting scheme or moving scenery projected on them. The combination of both their voices works perfectly to elevate their sound to another plane of existence. They embody the shoegazing aesthetic of inward expression; something which is so powerful when done right.
