First Watch:

Farm Hand

by trevor elkin

With its arcane oddness and warped, subterranean beats, the music of Farm Hand seems very much at ease alone in the dark. With debut album ‘International Dreams’ due to emerge sometime soon, we’re pleased to share the subtly disturbing, ovine-themed video for ‘Solution’ from that same album.

Farm Hand, the solo project of Mark Daman Thomas, Shape Records founder and member of Islet began in 2016, with Thomas setting a rather unconventional trend by performing in a bat cave, no less, near the Green Man Festival site. ‘Solution’ is centred around a single fuzzy, drunken loop, knitted with Thomas’ almost ecclesiastic singing style. The lyrics are characteristically concise: “Precision, Solution” – thoughts inspired by an inner dialogue that keeps his occasionally wandering mind in check.

The whole thing, as ragged and wildly beautiful as the Radnorshire hills, is explored below in a filmed (and surprisingly tense) moonlit drive: “I shot this video on my phone on the road between Glascwm and Colva in Powys, Wales. Most of it was shot by me on my own on the way back from a conversational Welsh group (I’m a new learner) in Llandrindod Wells. Then some of it (the bit with the sheep) was shot with my brother, JT, driving after we’d just been to see our Uncle sing in his male voice choir on the show ground in Builth. Best gig I’ve been to in quite some time, I must say.”

‘International Dreams’, is out on 3rd November, pre-order it here
