First Watch:

“The Importance Of Each Other”

by trevor elkin

From Douse‘s ‘The Light In You Has Left’ (one of our favourite album discoveries this year) we’re pleased to share the sublime, meditative video interpretation of ‘The Importance Of Each Other’.

The guitar swell dramas and orchestrations of the track play off Alea Clark’s lyrics, which revolve around a longing for someone, wanting to understand and help them, but finding it a hopeless endeavour. Intuitively, introspective music like this demands a visual narrative that pulls its characters apart in some kind of impossible scenario. Going one better, Vancouver’s Nakasone Folk Studio (finest creators of music video for the likes of Teen Daze, How To Dress Well and Slow Down Molasses) worked with the band to produce a subtle, yet profound articulation of what each member saw in the song, conveyed as a series of chores each fails to accomplish.

The whole thing is embraced tightly by a heart-rending sense of something, or someone missing from the picture. It makes us reflect that in our isolation we only notice something’s not right when we are confronted with our own inadequacy: the importance of others is in the small things we do.
