Crave You

(Flight Facilities cover)

words by tom johnson

For those not yet up-to-speed (and we’d highly recommend such a thing) MADEIRA is the solo project of Kim Pflaum, the original voice of Yumi Zouma who launched her dazzling solo project last year with the brilliant ‘Bad Humours’ EP – an intoxicating mix of YZ with a more gleaming, electro-pop outlook.

Her first new music since the EP, and a few days shy of a London headline show at Urban Bar (details below), Pflaum today unveils her cover of Flight Facilities’ Crave You and it’s every bit as bright and captivating as we’ve come to expect, a refined opening minute of voice and keys gently brooding in to something more upbeat as subtle beats and colourful adornments weave their way in to the mix. As always, Pflaum’s voice is the absorbing anchor here, her radiant, simmering voice at the core of the whole thing throughout, the playful strands of instrumentation never straying too far from that centrepiece.

Here’s what Pflaum herself had to say about the new track:

I’ve been a Flight Facilities fan for a long while, and was lucky enough to see them last year while at Austin City Limits. There’s something really special about their music that transports you to another time and place. When I listen to their music I always get the feeling I’m on holiday in Italy or Switzerland, driving through the alps in a classic car past pristine lakes and world class vistas. So it’s only natural that I’d want to cover one of their songs to try be a part of that. This track really speaks too me, the longing and unrequited love (well that’s how I read it) are topics that I feel are sort of my speciality! It reminds me of a great track by sixties group The Honeys ‘The One You Can’t Have (is the one that you want the most)’, that feeling of not being able to make it work with the person you really want to. I approached Alistair from Boycrush to work on the track with me and really happy with what we’ve come up with together! I love the almost MJ style baseline. I think it really suits this version. I hope you all like it too.

Listen to the new track below; MADEIRA plays the Urban Bar in London on October 19th, get tickets here, via Dice.
