Modern Studies and Lomond Campbell
words by tom johnson
Initially performed as part of a special week of shows at the Edinburgh International Festival last year, Scottish luminaries Modern Studies and Lomond Campbell come together again later this month with another performance of ‘Sounding’, their live collaboration with the Pumpkinseeds Chamber Orchestra. Trading Edinburgh’s Stockbridge Church – which hosted three nights of performance back in August – with Glasgow’s St. Luke’s venue, the new event takes place on January 21st – with more details available and tickets available here.
Coinciding with the approaching showcase, a new film from Edinburgh filmmaker Mario Cruzado highlights the detailed specialties of the performance, from Lomond Campbell’s tender, string-led arrangements – which made his Black River Promise LP such an endearing piece of work – to Modern Studies’ powerfully hypnotic and brooding soundscapes.
Both a behind-the-scenes documentary of the Sounding experience and a forceful performance video in its own right, the evocative film is a snapshot of Modern Studies craft – the band have subsequently signed to Fire Records for a new album this year – and a timely reminder of the approaching show. Check out the new video below right now.
