“Are You Sure?”

~

words by Ben Tipple

Comprising university friends Rach, Balla and Jess, Peaness’ sun-kissed fuzz-pop is built on a serious DIY foundation. Recently signing to the venerable Alcopop! Records roster, they join a throng of artists sharing a notable ethos: music with attitude, and an unabashed sense of fun. It’s punk in the very loosest sense. Associations with the genre are in feel alone, rather than in sound.

Instead, the five tracks on “Are You Sure?”, the band’s second EP following their 2015 debut and misleadingly titled “No Fun”, are perfectly upbeat. Whether they are singing about food waste on “Ugly Veg” or tackling the cabin fever of hometown seclusion on “Same Place”, they retain a beautifully whimsical sound.

Heartbreak has never sounded so positive on opener “Oh George”, even when Peaness deliver the show stopping “you lied to me and my family” declaration. The pained need to express their feelings, as hinted at in the track’s first line, runs throughout the record. It’s as if they never wanted to express these feelings, but simply have to. Should that be the case, it might as well be genuinely fun.

Rather than be downtrodden, Peaness opt for sheer jubilance. The result, available to listen to in full below, is an early contender for that summer soundtrack. “Are You Sure?” is a musical rainbow, a moment of beauty appearing only during that sweet spot between sunshine and an inevitable downpour. I’ll be dancing in the rain.
