End of Sam-soon

words by tom johnson

We might only be able to offer you one extra day with the brilliant new album from Smut – it gets its full release tomorrow – but that might well prove to be invaluable time, given the way in which the record tries its very hardest to keep its secrets close to its chest, only gradually the listener little glimpses of what you could and should, eventually, find buried inside.

A thick-wedge of noise-pop, End Of Sam-soon arrives via the ever-dependable Broken Circles label, and it makes for a tremendously immersive undertaking, the elements of shoegaze mixed with that aforementioned noisiness resulting in a breathless, somewhat intoxicating record – and one of the more formidable, vehement guitar records that we’ve been treated to all year.

We’re very pleased to stream the whole album from the Ohio quintet here today – and you can listen to it below the band’s own extended introduction. Check it out:

End of Sam-soon is a really important record for us. It’s our first properly released collection of songs but also marks the end of an era for us as band. It comes from a very bittersweet place and it reflects within the songs. Musically, we wanted to try and see how many different ways we could mix melody and noise, harmony and dissonance.  Each song is kind of a different dissection of a typical pop or rock structure. Lyrically, the album is very personal and observational, each song dealing with entirely different subject matter. “Video Cell” deals primarily with themes of isolation and neglect at the hands of technology, while “Rosewater” is about the anxiety and pressure that exists, even in the healthiest relationships. “Bones of Summer” is about losing something before it even really exists. “Blush” tackles the confusion of an adolescent crush. “Sam-soon” remembers something it wants to forget and “Shuteye” is about the frustration of insomnia.
