Words by Dan Carson
South Shields raised songstress Lulu James has finally unveiled ‘Closer’, her first release on RCA and the follow up to 2012’s ‘Be Safe’; the track which first ignited our lust for the 21-year-old’s genre-defying, dance floor melting future pop.
Centre stage are Lulu’s vocals: deep, soulful murmurs rolling into velvety coos, reaching at the sort of powerful, pristine notes so sought after by modern Rn’B and dance producers. Her flexible range is a potent and vital hook within the sensual murk of pulsating bass throbs and echoing hip-hop breaks.
A product of her recording sessions with The Invisible’s Dave Okumu, ‘Closer’ once again displays Lulu’s affinity with sewing discordant influences together to create sleek intoxicating new sounds.
