McCafferty were never meant to make another EP. After gaining a cult following, the Cleveland, Ohio band eventually broke up to focus on their studies at school. One of their pals however, wasn’t ready to give up on the McCafferty dream and they set up a GoFundMe campaign with a hope that the money raised would go towards a new release. The initial goal was set at $500 but the campaign raised a mammoth $3,500 – proving that McCafferty’s pal wasn’t the only one who wanted the band to get back together.
“Trailer Trash” is the first teaser from upcoming EP Thanks. Sorry. Sure. and proves that the four-piece are as self-aware as ever. Playing out like a drunken rant between friends who can’t even remember what they’re fighting about, McCafferty make slammin’ pop-punk that manages to make desperation and hopelessness sound like a party. It’s a cathartic release in navigating fallen friendships; of the fear in realizing you actually don’t like yourself that much and the paranoia that comes with catching yourself in the mirror.
The song is a straight-up banger that flits between frantic, flailing lead guitar and uncompromising percussion. It’s an exercise in frustration and fear, as the band expertly break the fourth wall, telling the listener “I hope you turn this shit off and you just get yourself out there”. At just over 2 minutes, McCafferty manage to encapsulate everything that makes us scared or angry or hopeless, turning it into something that feels both urgent and freeing. “Trailer Trash” is akin to screaming into a pillow in a locked bedroom, as a party plays out downstairs and you can get your fill below.
