introduction by tom johnson

Having recently joined the ranks of the ever-great Play It Again, Sam label, US/Swedish four-piece FEWS look set to claim 2016 as their own, with their debut album currently in tweaking mode with much-lauded producer Dan Carey at the helm.

New track ‘The Zoo’ is the epitome of the charming craft, a moody, layered blast of darkened rock and roll that throws somewhat heady vocals in to a dense weave of guitars and propulsive percussion. Tying in the with the release of said track (check out the video just below), and their forthcoming live show with Bloc Party for [PIAS] Nites showcase, we asked the band to put together a playlist of their ten favourite new bands from Sweden and it might just be the soundtrack that these winter months were positively crying out for. Listen below.

YUNG LEAN – ICE COLD SMOKE

This track is our favorite from his ’unknown memory’ album. It’s one of the songs I’ve listened to the most while being in Berlin for most of the summer, last year. Fucking vibe. Yung Lean is still fresh.

FRANSKA TRION – ROUGE

I think these guys ain’t that new to be honest but it’s way too beautiful to not include in this list. i heard this song some year ago after shitloads of drinks at one of my closest friends place. it made a huge impact and it’s still does the trick.

SANDRA MOSH – SKALLGÅNG

This girl is out of this world. I think she’s based in Malmö and she is one of the best DJs out there. It’s impossible to not get into this song., it hypnotises me every time. One of my go-to get-psyched songs, to get in the mood y’know. A huge inspiration.

HEY ELBOW – BLANCA

I’ve seen these live a few times now. They are one of the best live bands in Sweden. They’ve got this really haunting french horn that kills me every time I hear it. Also the vocals are really really good. The drums too. Yeah, you’ll understand when you hear their shit. It’s proper.

DOLORES HAZE – TOUCH ME

This band are so fucking hyped right now and I understand why. They have an edit of this track which is the most popular one but the album version is way better. A lot more feel about it. Dolores Haze are gonna get big, and not only in Sweden.

VANLIGT FOLK – HERRAR OCH HUNDAR

I just discovered this song. Holy fucking shit. It’s one of those songs when I’m getting ready to go out and just end up drinking alone with headphones on full blast listening to this track over and over. And over. And over. The vocals, maaaaate.

NATTEN – HELVETET

i know nothing about this band and i kinda’ want it to stay like that. the song starts off with this amazing bass line and continues and they just add more and more. really hypnotizing. suddenly some brass comes in and makes it uncomfortable – in the best way. i love music that makes me feel the opposite feelings at the same time. this track is one of those.

AMASON – ÄLGEN

These guys know what they are doing. It’s quite clear that they’re amazing musicians. I can’t really explain it and nor do I want to either. Just listen to it for fuck sake. It’s perfect.

YUNG – TOO GOOD FOR YOU

We played with these guys at Eurosonic the other day! Even though I didn’t see it because we were probably busy getting shit-faced. I checked them out properly the following days and found this one. 100% my favourite. The acoustic guitar is something I want to have written. The vocals are also ace. These boys are gonna explode.

SYKET – GRILLSTUGAN

I wouldn’t really count ’Syket’ as a new band but I think they are releasing new stuff soon so this goodie should be included in this list. The song is so fucking good. One of those drunk-sing-along-songs. The electric guitar riff in the background does the whole song, it has the same effect as the Raveonettes song ’Recharge & Revolt’. Fucken eeeehhh.
