bentcousin | Dizzy
by Tom Johnson
You’re not supposed to like bentcousin. Or at least that’s what you’re told. Bratty, assertive and completely unsubtle, the level of restraint that some bands strive for is conspicuous by its absence here – and yet they somehow still manage to be utterly lovable; and never more so than on their delicious new single, ‘Dizzy‘. An ode to their hometown of Brighton, the duo – irl twins Patrick and Amelia – teamed up with a rapper they met “in the children’s end of the municipal swimming pool in Brighton” for the new track, which is released by Conor Oberst’s Team Love Records and comes backed by a B-side which features original Clash and PiL guitarist Keith Levene.
While the splash of hip-hop that suddenly bursts in is an energetic and surprisingly joyous addition, it’s what goes on around it that makes this track so spectacularly endearing. The guitars are radiant and perfectly unsettled but it’s Amelia’s vocals that steal the show; reaching every corner of the track they’re a gloriously woozy weapon and they provide the raging heartbeat which sits at the centre of a genuinely striking single.
